Abstract
The purpose of this reader is to provide undergraduate students with systematic information about the new political systems around the eastern Baltic seaboard and Northwest Russia. Our aim is to enable students to gain access to information on par with the extensive literature already existing on the politics of Scandinavia and Western Europe. The book begins with an overview of some of the main theories of regime transition and democratic consolidation in order to establish a common conceptual framework for the readers. The first half of the book contains chapters for each of the political entities from Russia in the north to Poland in the southwest. It has been our aim to standardise these chapters as much as possible to help students gain a comparative understanding of similarities and differences between these exciting new democracies. The second half of the volume consists of chapters discussing some of the political problems facing these new democracies: the questions of citizenship and ethnicity in particular. Our intention is to furnish the readers with examples of interesting problems for further studies. Whereas the country chapters are intended for use in a basic comparative course on European politics, the thematic chapters are meant for intermediary level teaching.
