Our goals and services

Our goal is to provide academics, governments, international organisations and NGOs with information for research and evidence-based evaluation of public policies.

We do not offer information or counselling to individuals interested in acquiring the citizenship of a particular country and we do not encourage experts in our network to answer such requests.

Testimonials
"This website is an indispensable source of a wealth of information and ideas for both people working on practical issues of citizenship and nationality and for those engaged in research in the area. Since the twin purposes which it serves are here to stay for the foreseeable future, its continuation is equally vital"
Elizabeth Meehan, Queen's University Belfast

Citizenship Glossary

The EUDO CITIZENSHIP glossary provides definitions and explanations of frequently used concepts and technical terms in our web-based observatory.

It is not an inventory of terms as they are used in the different nationality laws, since these frequently employ different terms for identical substantive rules. Instead, we attempt to introduce a standardized terminology that makes it possible to compare modes of acquisition and loss of nationality across countries.

For translations and a brief discussion of the use of the terms "citizenship" and "nationality" in legal documents and political debates in the countries covered by EUDO Citizenship, click here.

The European Migration Network (EMN) has also developed a useful glossary with common definitions and understanding of terms in the field of asylum and migration. It provides translations of key terms into the official EU languages.
